Story Idea #048 – Choosing a New Mechanic or Repair Shop

Finding a mechanic usually happens when something is already wrong, which is exactly when people are least interested in conducting careful research.

We want to build a checklist drivers can use before the emergency: licensing or certification where relevant, reputation, written estimates, diagnostic practices, warranty terms, communication, willingness to explain priorities and the shop’s approach to authorizing additional work.

Online reviews will be part of the picture but not the whole picture. A perfect rating can be less useful than patterns in detailed reviews—especially how a shop handles mistakes, disputed diagnoses or work that becomes more expensive than expected.

Gig drivers have an extra concern: downtime. A slightly cheaper repair is not necessarily cheaper if the car sits unusable for days. The final guide will help drivers compare price, competence, turnaround and trust before they need to hand over the keys.
