Story Idea #049 – Rust-Proofing for Gig Drivers: Protecting Your Car in Salt, Snow and Coastal Climates

A gig car can cover a lot of winter kilometres, repeatedly bathing its underside in road salt, slush and coastal moisture. Rust prevention therefore becomes part of operating-cost management, not just cosmetic pride.

We want to compare common rust-proofing approaches: oil or wax-based sprays, electronic claims, factory protection, undercoatings and simple washing practices. What has credible evidence behind it? How often should treatments be repeated, and when can a product trap moisture or make later repairs miserable?

The story will also look at where corrosion matters most for safety and longevity—brake and fuel lines, suspension mounting points, subframes and body seams—rather than focusing only on visible fenders.

Drivers in Atlantic Canada and other salt-heavy climates can help us with long-term examples. We are especially interested in similar vehicles that received different rust-prevention treatment and aged very differently.
