Story Idea #066 – Does DoorDash Track Driver Accidents, Their Causes, and Liability Claims?
Delivery platforms know an extraordinary amount about the work taking place through their apps: when an offer was sent, when it was accepted, where the driver travelled, when a pickup occurred and when the delivery was completed.
That makes us curious about a different category of data: accidents.
When a Dasher is involved in a collision during a delivery, what does DoorDash record? Does the company maintain statistics on the number and severity of crashes involving active Dashers? Does it know whether an accident occurred while the driver was navigating, responding to an offer, communicating with a customer or performing some other app-related task? Does it track insurance or liability claims arising from those incidents?
We do not yet know the answers. This is an investigation and media-inquiry story, not an accusation that DoorDash is concealing accident data or that any particular app feature causes crashes.
The reason for asking is straightforward. If a company designs a system that people use while driving, safety feedback should be one of the most important signals available to the designers. Aggregate accident and near-miss information could potentially reveal patterns that ordinary usability testing misses.
We want to ask DoorDash what information it collects, how incidents are categorized, which teams review them, and whether accident data has ever led to a change in the Dasher app. We also want to understand what privacy limits apply and what information can reasonably be published in aggregate without exposing individual drivers or customers.
A related question is whether drivers themselves ever get to see the safety picture. If the platform has learned something from thousands or millions of delivery trips, should some of that knowledge be shared back with the people doing the driving?
This story begins with a simple question: does DoorDash know how often its drivers crash while working—and, if it does, what has it learned?
