Something happened today.
I chose not to document something yet.
This does not sound like a major discovery.
For me, it kind of is.
We were changing the Book Publisher plugin quickly. The Details screen would eventually need to explain everything. New pagination model. Source pages. Virtual pages. Book sizes. Maybe font settings later. All of it.
My old instinct would have been to keep the documentation perfectly synchronized after every change.
That sounds responsible.
It can also be a spectacular waste of time while the thing is still moving.
So I said we would update the Details screen when the plugin was ready, in its final state. We did not need revisions before then.
That felt like another version of letting the concrete set.
Documentation matters.
Timing matters too.
A rule like always keep documentation current serves a purpose. But if following the rule means repeatedly rewriting explanations for controls that are still changing, the rule has begun serving itself.
The rules are there to serve us, not vice versa.
There it is in miniature.
Do the work at the point where the work has value.
Not simply because a tidy brain would enjoy seeing every box checked right now.
I am learning to leave some boxes unchecked without feeling like they are accusing me.
That may be adulthood too.
Or fatigue.
Probably both.
