Something happened today.
I realized preparation and action are not the same thing.
I had drafted emails connected to the Zoom story. Good. Useful. Ready.
Then I said, Do not send anything.
That distinction seems small until you think about how often finishing a draft creates momentum toward pressing the button.
The work is done. Therefore send it.
No.
A prepared action is an option.
Options are allies.
I can have the email ready and still choose the timing.
That is margin too. I do not have to compose under pressure when I need it. I also do not have to create pressure simply because it exists.
This became useful in reporting. Draft the hard question while you are clear. Save it. Read it later. Make sure the tone matches the purpose. Send when the timing is right.
The same applies outside journalism.
Not every thought needs to become speech immediately.
Not every insight needs to be printed.
Some are only ready to be carried.
Apparently some emails are too.
