Story Idea #069 – Rufus Dreams of Hiring Homer Simpson — In Rod We Trust

Rufus has apparently reached the stage of executive recruitment where even his dreams need an HR department.

In this Daily Rufus cartoon, he dreams that he has landed Homer Simpson as a major new executive hire. Rufus heads to the office, understandably eager to meet the famous recruit.

We are going to stop the description there.

The source notes contain the visual reveal, the desk detail that turns the scene into a second joke, and a small background Easter egg for viewers who enjoy discovering things on the second look. Those are exactly the parts a preview should not give away.

What we can say is that the cartoon grew out of a running joke about whether all the ambitious SOAPSzone and app ideas might somehow be upstaged by one of the least impressive objects ever elevated to heroic status in television comedy: the inanimate carbon rod.

That led naturally—or as naturally as anything involving Rufus can lead—to the phrase “In Rod We Trust.” From there the gag became a dream about corporate hiring, executive expectations and the possibility that the organization’s newest senior employee may have an unusually limited résumé.

The tone will be classic Rufus: absurd, deadpan and visually economical. The character’s expression should carry most of the reaction. We do not need a paragraph inside the cartoon explaining why the situation is funny. If the image works, the audience will get it.

This is also the kind of piece we want The Daily Rufus to become: a place where tiny jokes, pop-culture fragments and whatever ridiculous thought happened to wander through the newsroom can be turned into a self-contained visual gag.

And yes, the executive office will have a nameplate. No, we are not telling you what it says yet.
