A small disagreement led to deeper harmony.
SAT
Something happened today.
One of the gifts of a relationship that lasts for decades is that you eventually acquire a very large archive of evidence that you are two different people. This should not be surprising. Somehow it still is.
We want closeness, and then we are startled when the other person continues to have an independent nervous system. I began seeing disagreement differently. A small disagreement does not have to threaten connection. In fact, if it is handled gently, it can deepen it.
By risking a small disagreement, you can discover a deeper harmony. The important word is risking. Because honest disagreement contains vulnerability. If I tell you what I really think, will you move away? If I correct you, will you feel attacked? If I say no, will I still be loved? Those questions can make us flatten ourselves in the name of peace.
But peace purchased by disappearing is not closeness. Closeness needs reality. Two actual people. Two actual perspectives. Two actual sets of needs. Gentleness does not remove those differences. It makes them safer to reveal. That was one of the ways my understanding of fierce kindness grew.
Fierce kindness without gentleness can become merely fierce. Gentleness without honesty can become merely polite. Together they have a chance of becoming intimate. I do not always get this right. That is precisely why the discovery matters. It gives me somewhere to steer.
