That was a surprisingly large doggy treat. The pressure dropped out of curiosity. I could say, Huh. Something happened there. Pocket. Carry it. Look again later. The meaning may arrive after the event. Sometimes it may never fully arrive. That is okay too.

The coin can remain a coin. This was the beginning of what I started calling accumulated discovery. One little insight is easy to dismiss. Coincidence. Mood. A random association. But then another arrives. And another. Not all connected. Not all profound.

Some barely worth a penny. Still, the pocket grows heavier. Eventually you notice that you are carrying something.

That was what the hedge-trimming morning felt like. The cord. The snag. The rake. The pocket. The coins. The lemon squares. A few book lines. A laugh. A practical problem. A small moment of caution. None of them individually justified a manifesto.

Together they changed the texture of the day. Reality is generous with clues. I liked that sentence as soon as it appeared. But even that needed care. Generous does not mean benevolent in the childish sense that everything happening around me was placed there for my benefit.

Reality also contains potholes, cancer, broken machinery, cruelty, bad weather and people who send emails beginning, Unfortunately, we are unable to assist you. The generosity is in availability. Reality is always giving information. The question is whether I am able to receive any of it. And that is why a hedge became a treasure map.

The treasure was not hidden by anyone. I had simply begun looking differently.
