Story Idea #019 – Uber Sues New York City Over Its New Just-Cause Driver Deactivation Protections

A new protection is only half the story when one of the companies it regulates immediately challenges it. Uber sued New York City over legislation intended to restrict discretionary driver deactivation.

We want to read the lawsuit alongside the law itself. What does Uber say the city got wrong? Which requirements does it argue are unlawful, impractical or harmful to platform operations? And what does the dispute reveal about how strongly the company values its existing control over who may continue using the platform?

The article will not treat a lawsuit as proof that either side is right. Uber’s legal claims deserve to be stated accurately, and the city’s reasons for adopting just-cause protections deserve the same treatment. We also want to follow what happens in court rather than freezing the story at the filing stage.

For Canadian readers, the case offers a useful window into a policy debate that could eventually appear here: how much procedural protection should an app-based worker have before access to income can be switched off?

Curious about the raw brainstorming behind this article?
