I realized that hope has doorways.

    MON

    Something happened today.

We often talk about hope as if it is a quantity. You have hope or you do not. But I began to suspect that hope may also have entrances. Different people enter through different doors. For me, discovery is one of them.

Give me a command to be hopeful and I may stare at you blankly. Give me a clue and ask, I wonder what happens if we follow this?—and something wakes up. That matters. When someone has lived in survival mode, hopelessness can begin to feel like realism.

Every dream has seemed too distant, too expensive, too fragile or too dependent on somebody else. Then a small possibility appears. Not a promise. A possibility. That is enough for curiosity to get its foot in the door. What if? Let us see. Maybe. Those words can carry more hope than a speech. That helped me stop treating my natural doorway as a flaw.

If clues, exploration and “let’s see” are what wake up my intelligence and hope, why demand that my brain enter through somebody else’s preferred door? That is another way the doggy treat metaphor grew. Positive reinforcement is not about forcing every brain to respond to the same biscuit.

It is about noticing what actually helps life move. For one person, it may be structure. For another, community. For another, beauty. For me, curiosity is often the key in the lock. Use the door that opens.
