Something happened today.
I found the courage to hold the whole coin. This may be one of the central discoveries in the book. Reality has two sides that human beings spend enormous energy trying to reconcile. Beauty. Wonder. Love. Birth. Music. Kindness. Mystery. And on the other side: Pain.
Hardship. Loss. Cruelty. Death. We keep wanting to choose which side tells the truth. Optimism can become an attempt to polish away the dark side. Pessimism can become an attempt to prove that the bright side is naive. But it is one coin.
The line that emerged almost accidentally was this: It takes courage to hold the whole coin in your hand. That is what paradox had been preparing me for. Not to resolve the coin. Hold it. Beauty does not cancel death. Death does not cancel beauty.
Love does not make loss impossible. Loss does not make love foolish. The universe contains quarks and cancer cells, sunsets and supernovas, babies and funerals, laughter and grief.
Reality is not required to become emotionally consistent before I agree to participate in it. That was the deeper invitation. Can I embrace reality without demanding that it show me only the side I can tolerate? This is where gentleness returned too.
The whole coin is overwhelming. Gentleness makes the overwhelming approachable. I do not have to grip the entire universe at once. I can hold one moment. One person. One loss. One joy. One clue. The courage is not in pretending the dark side is light. The courage is in refusing to drop the coin because it has two sides.
