Story Idea #101 – Creating Rufus: How SOAPSzone’s Resident Character Came to Life
At some point a journalism and advocacy site apparently needed a black, curly-haired Cocker Spaniel with opinions.
Rufus became that dog.
This article will trace how a recurring cartoon character moved from a one-off creative idea into part of the SOAPSzone identity. The interesting part is not only the visual design. It is the role the character began filling.
Rufus can ask a simple question that would sound heavy-handed in an editorial. He can react to an absurd corporate process without turning every complaint into anger. He can carry small jokes, visual Easter eggs and observations that do not justify a full investigation but still say something true about the experience of technology and gig work.
The Daily Rufus format also creates a different rhythm for the site. Not every visit needs to begin with a 2,000-word examination of deactivation policy. Sometimes a reader should get a dog staring at an inanimate carbon rod and move on with the day slightly happier.
We will document the decisions behind the character: appearance, black-and-white visual style, recurring tone, what kinds of jokes belong to Rufus and what kinds do not, and how consistency is maintained when AI image tools are part of production.
There is a branding question too. A recurring character can become recognizable in ways a logo cannot, but only if the personality remains coherent rather than becoming a generic mascot pasted onto unrelated material.
Rufus was not in the original project plan.
That is becoming a recurring theme around here.
