Story Idea #022 – Biometrics and Gig Work: What Canadian Drivers Should Know About Voiceprints, Facial Recognition and Identity Matching

Gig workers already encounter identity checks, photographs and account-security systems. Biometric technology adds a different layer because it can turn physical or behavioural traits into identifiers that are difficult—or impossible—to replace if misused.

Our Canadian research highlights voiceprints as sensitive biometric personal information and points to facial-recognition decisions showing that public availability does not automatically authorize unrestricted biometric reuse. We want to bring those principles into the gig-work context without claiming that every identity check is the same technology.

The story will distinguish ordinary photos, recorded audio, facial matching, voiceprints and other biometric templates. We will ask what the platforms disclose, what consent is obtained, how long biometric information is retained, who can access it, and what happens when automated identity matching gets it wrong.

The practical question for drivers is simple: when an app asks for something tied to your identity, what exactly is being collected and what can happen to it afterward?
