Story Idea #059 – Seat Belt Laws for Delivery Drivers Across Canada: Province-by-Province Exemptions and Differences
A delivery driver may climb in and out of a vehicle dozens of times during a shift. In some Canadian provinces that kind of frequent-stop work can qualify for a seat-belt exemption under specific conditions; in others, the rules are narrower or no comparable exemption has been found.
Our research has already produced one important warning: a quick government summary is not always enough. In both Nova Scotia and Ontario, a second pass through the enabling legislation changed the preliminary picture. Some provinces use a 40 km/h threshold, some define the work differently, and older exemptions may have been repealed.
The eventual guide will cover all provinces and territories using current primary law plus official guidance. It will also distinguish an exemption that technically exists from one a gig driver can realistically rely on. A 40 km/h-limited rule, for example, cannot sensibly be treated as permission to drive an entire mixed-speed delivery route unbuckled.
This is exactly the kind of practical legal question where confident shortcuts can be dangerous. Every jurisdictional answer will carry its source and its conditions.
