Story Idea #109 – Hiring Gig Drivers to Help Build SOAPSzone: Outsourcing Tasks and Valuing Their Lived Experience

If SOAPSzone is built for gig workers, some of the people helping build it should probably know gig work from the inside.

This story will explore a small-project staffing idea: hire gig drivers for clearly defined pieces of SOAPSzone work when their lived experience is an asset rather than treating every task as something that must be done by a conventional contractor.

That could include testing the driver utility app, documenting store layouts, reviewing practical guides, collecting public information, testing instructions under real delivery conditions or helping identify the difference between a theoretically useful feature and one that actually makes sense during a shift.

The principle is not that every driver automatically has expertise in every project task. It is that firsthand knowledge has value and should be paid for when the project relies on it.

We also want to think carefully about the gig model itself. SOAPSzone criticizes platforms when flexible work becomes a reason to externalize costs or undervalue labour. We should not reproduce that behaviour by offering vague microtasks at bargain-basement rates simply because workers are accustomed to gig pricing.

The article will document how assignments are defined, how compensation is set, what information contributors need to protect, and how credit or anonymity is handled when their work informs reporting.

There is a broader experiment here too. Could a small publication create useful, genuinely flexible paid work for people who already understand the community it serves?

If the answer is yes, the drivers would not merely be subjects, readers or sources.

They would become part of the production system.
