App 16 – Giving the Video Library Real Actions

The first Video Library let drivers find and play recordings. The next step was to let them actually manage those recordings.

Depending on the file’s current state, the detail screen could offer Play, Delete, Retry upload, Restore a cloud-only copy to the phone, Share or Export, and view the recording’s metadata, notes and bookmarks.

Deletion was treated carefully because a recording might exist in two places. The app needed to distinguish deleting the local copy, the cloud copy or both, and destructive actions required confirmation. It was specifically not allowed to interpret Delete as ‘wipe every copy everywhere.’

The same state-aware idea applied to every action. A cloud-only file should not be silently downloaded merely because the user opened its detail page. A failed upload should reuse the existing upload queue. The interface would show only actions that made sense for the recording’s actual state.
