Story Idea #029 – Building Relationships with Governments That Support Gig-Driver Rights

Research can sit on a website and wait to be discovered, or it can be put directly in front of the people who write policy. SOAPSzone wants to understand how to do the second without turning journalism into partisan lobbying.

We want to identify elected officials, departments, regulators and committees already working on gig-worker issues and learn the most useful way to share documented problems with them. That means sending evidence rather than slogans, asking for corrections when we misunderstand a rule, and making the same underlying research available publicly so readers can judge it too.

The story will explore the boundary between advocacy and reporting. Supporting stronger driver rights does not require pretending every proposed solution is good. A useful relationship with government should include the ability to challenge weak policy, question unintended consequences and publish disagreements.

This is partly a process story: how can a small independent project turn recurring driver problems into policy conversations while remaining transparent about what it is asking for and why?
